Telemedicine Improves Care for Cardiac Patients

By: Finn Snyder (adapted)

The medical device manufacturer Sorin Group has teamed up with communications provider Orange Business Services to develop a remote follow-up tool for patients fitted with cardiac devices for the treatment of arrhythmias.
The solution is based on Sorin Group's implantable devices that transmit data, using an external follow-up system in the patient's home and Orange Business Services’ ability to manage data transmission to physicians. According to the vendors, this telemedicine solution will facilitate the management of patient follow-up: data is transmitted electronically from the implanted cardiac device to the cardiologist. The patient does not have to leave home. Based on the data, physicians will be able to detect arrhythmia or cardiac disease development. They can quickly offer suitable treatment aimed at improving the patient's quality of life and reducing the risk of hospitalization.
Patients fitted with cardiac devices for the treatment of arrhythmias must receive regular follow-up from their cardiologist. This is necessary in order to ensure that the device is working properly and that the suitable treatment is complied with. This remote follow-up system enables the physician to access all the data recorded by the implant from the patient's home. It “represents a major step forward in patient medical follow-up, helping doctors to treat an increasing number of patients wearing implantable stimulators and defibrillators”, according to a vendor spokesperson.
Expert cardiologists collaborate in the development of the algorithms and data used in Sorin Group’s stimulators, cardiac defibrillators, and resynchronization devices. This information provides healthcare teams with specifics on how the device operates, as well as on the patient's condition. These diagnostic capabilities allow valuable warning messages to be transmitted to physicians, providing them with relevant information and therefore greater peace of mind for patients.
This innovative, remote follow-up solution is based on Sorin Group’s “renowned expertise in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and … our solid experience in e-health solutions”, according to the vendor.
“Our strategy is to work with recognized companies in their specialized fields,” declared Stefano Di Lullo, President of the CRM Business Unit, the Sorin Group. “We are delighted to have signed this agreement with Orange Business Services, a global integration operator and leader in its field of very advanced telecommunications services ... This partnership also illustrates Sorin Group’s constant commitment to reinforce care levels provided to patients as well as service levels dispensed to healthcare professionals. ” “Advanced medical technologies and innovative therapeutic solutions provided by Sorin Group, along with Orange’s expertise in the application and management of complex integration projects, will enable the development of a solution that will contribute to increasing the quality of patient care”, added Thierry Zylberberg, Director of Orange Healthcare.
